Abstract

The ideas and opinions expressed in this article evolved through a series of focused meetings among the members of the National Academies of Sciences, Medicine and Engineering (NASEM) at Emory University. Despite modern scientific and technological advances, the response to the COVID-19 pandemic has clearly exposed vulnerabilities in society and the shortcomings of public health institutions worldwide. The pandemic has become a challenge for healthcare organizations and agencies to address the identified deficiencies and develop strategies for a better and more secure future beyond the pandemic.
